Principles of Design Part 1: Balance and Contrast

All art is made of simple shapes, some relationships are more powerful then others. Photographers, Illustrators, comic book artists, graphic designers utilize the Principles of Design every day to make their work stronger. The shapes create what we call a Composition.

Balance

Balance tells us about sturdy, safe structures - it shows us the piece has a trustworthy, predictable, hard to knock off balance, egalitarian feeling where everyone is equal, even if they are opposite - the forces are equal to each other, are connected and in a safe relationship. Using Balance as a compositional structure is a great way to help tell a story about those things.

Contrast

Difference in size/color/texture/lightness + darkness to create dynamic relationships that leap out of the image and force us to notice something. It is the Difference that calls us to understand an aspect or clue about characters and their relationship, NOT their similarity. What is DIFFERENT in each of these pieces, and what does it signal to us about what is happening in each piece?

Today's Task

You have 10 minutes to create a mini collage that shows BALANCE and another 10 minutes to create a mini collage that shows CONTRAST.
