Iterative Drawing - Character Design Week 4 Day 1 @Chelsea CTE

But why?

+ Iterative drawing allows designers to create and test ideas quickly. Those that show promise can be iterated rapidly until they take sufficient shape to be developed; those that fail to show promise can quickly be abandoned.

+ the part of the process centered around trailing and testing and making variations allows you to discover what works and is at the core of what you are creating

+ To advance toward greater desirability, all designers return to the act of creating to make improvements, which are then evaluated to see if they solved the weaknesses without creating new ones. This iterative and synergistic interplay between creation and evaluation is the basic process of design found in all creative fields. Talk to any designer in any field and you will find that creation, evaluation, and iteration are at the root of what they do.

Familiar Characters and their Design Process:

Disney's Hercules

Disney's Frozen

Disney Villains

Today's Tasks:

We are going to have 10 minutes to sketch a character, and then 30 minutes to sketch 5 variations (iterations) of that character. We'll check in as a group and get feedback about each, then choose 1 to begin adding details to. After another 30 minutes of developing, we'll do 3 variations on the face structure of this character (10 or 15 minutes), and then meet back in the middle to see what everyone came up with.
