Balance: This is about the distribution of visual weight in an image. Can be Symmetrical, Asymmetrical and Radial. Images that are composed around the principle of balance often feel grounded, calm, structured in a commanding, safe or institutional way.
Contrast (+Proportion +Variety): The use of difference between elements to create tension and relationship. That can include value change, size differences, color differences etc.
Emphasis: Creating a focal point that dramatically calls the viewer's attention to the most important part of an image.
Pattern + Repetition: Patterns establish history, connection, relationship. There are patterns in music, behavior, family patterns and cultural structures - they can enhance a sense of place, set up a baseline or provide a context/esthetic continuity within a piece
Unity: Creates a sense of harmony amongst parts/pieces that all fit together to make a whole. Unity refers to the places where things align or create continuity, even if things change across different parts.
Movement/Rhythm: Movement is used as a conscious way of guiding the eye through an image - the longer we engage with a journey, the more information we take in about it and stronger relationship we form with a piece. Rhythm helps create both a sense of movement and almost-repitition, subtle variations that keep us locked in for longer. Music, especially flow and beat based styles like Hip-Hop utilize rhythm in a similar way.
Group Task:
Each team will create 1 construction paper collage of each principle of design (So 7 total mini collages per table). You decide with your team who does what and how.
