Quick Anatomy Lesson (Skill building for Interactions Project @APR)

Proportions of the Face

Face forward and in profile

1. Talk about how the structures underneath our skin shape the way we look - I want students to understand what the simple shapes most artists use as a base are representing, before we use those same simple structures to build our faces

2. Have students follow along on their sketch paper as I lay out a super simple face and apply rules of proportion to a face looking forward on the white board - Take a volunteer model to talk through/show how I personalize that simplistic face shape to match a real person - then give students 2 or 3 minutes to make the features on their drawing more specific

3. Demo a head in profile - connecting how the front face proportions apply, and after a simple shape - how I can make it more specific

4. Hand out nice paper for teams to begin sketching their final piece, and let students tell me when they are ready for material application (some might not be in this session)

METaphorical Fashion Design 1/2 @LiberationDP

Fight/Flight/Freeze/Fawn in Nature:

Plants and animals already wear their responses to danger - how can we be inspired by some of these traits to make clothing that represents how we respond to stress in our environment?

Translating those responses into Runway Fashion:

What stress responses do you notice in each of these outfits?

Now it is your turn to design an outfit about how YOU respond to stress:

1. When you get frustrated/nervous/uncomfortable, what do you do?
2. What does that frustration/nervousness/discomfort feel like?
3. What kind of textures, shapes and colors would show that feeling?

*Discuss/Demo some shape language and texture with the group on chart paper

Fashion Design Process:

Today is about sketching some ideas and coming up with a plan - next week we will use our brainstorm to flesh out a single design with different kinds of materials.

Projected timeline for project completion: 3 sessions
